NO KIDDING! Understatement.

I look forward to being there for this game as well, but for a CFL regular season game?

Hey, I'm not bashing this and the enthusiasm...BUT REALLY! Get some seating to cover the DAMN TRACK!

:flag: Whoa guys, hold on a minute before you start bashing it because of the track. I know the sight lines are taken back a bit with a running track but c'mon. I seem to know of quite a few CFL stadiums and CIOS stadiums that also have running tracks and it doesn't seem to bother the regular fans too much.

-Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton
-Olympic Stadium in Montreal
-Husky Stadium in Halifax

When I've been to games in Halifax, we hardly noticed the track because it was always there and we were used to it. :beauty:

Watched many a game at JW Little Memorial Stadium in my day at Western and the track, well, wasn't even a factor for me for my enjoyment of the games, alchohol or no alcohol. Some of the TiCats fans on Ticats.ca concentrate way too much that our new stadium for the PanAms are going to have a track around it. Big deal.

Another interesting article I dug up while surfing this morning

HALIFAX LOSING BIG TIME TO MONCTON IN CFL BID
(Photo caption: New field at X but N.S. needs a CFL stadium)

I don’t like writing this column because from the day I landed here in 1972 I kept hearing that Halifax was on the verge of a CFL Franchise. It wasn’t then and is no where close now. But Moncton has clearly taken a lead and might win handily in this race.

It’s not about population. Sure Halifax wins hands down with this one but Moncton can make a case for population within a 3-hour drive of their site.

It’s about a stadium and the New Brunswick city wins, hands down as they have one and are increasing it and Halifax doesn’t. Yes, it’s that clear and that simple.

A few years ago Moncton got funds for a ten-thousand seat stadium for an International Track and Field event which will be held next year.

Then, they got funding to increase that stadium to a 20-thousand seater. Good move.

The formalities will be announced next week but Moncton will hold a CFL exhibition game next week.

Halifax had there’s a few years ago but it cost a fortune to bring in temporary seating from Montreal.

No, temporary seating in Moncton but a great start to a possible CFL future.

Why hasn’t Halifax done anything in getting a field? The answer is simple and that is our leading citizen Mayor Peter Kelly, simply doesn’t give a damn

Another good article on next Fall's game:

Moncton CFL story in this year's spotlight

Published Tuesday December 29th, 2009

Toronto Argonauts will play regular season home game here in 2010
Neil Hodge

It was one of New Brunswick's highest profile sports stories in 2009.

It will also be one of the province's top sports stories in 2010 and likely well beyond that. It was officially announced on Oct. 15 that the Canadian Football League will play its first-ever regular season game in the Atlantic region next September in Moncton.

The Toronto Argonauts will be the home team in this historic contest at the Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium, which will have a 20,000 capacity for this event. Their opponent and the date will likely be announced in January.

CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon led off with a joke during a glitzy and jam-packed news conference. "Did anybody know about this?," he asked knowing that details had already leaked out the media.

Cohon also recounted a conversation that he had with Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc about next year's game here.

"I said 'This would be like a mini Grey Cup weekend' and he got offended," said a smiling Cohon. "He said 'What do you mean, mini?'"

LeBlanc was beaming with pride as he spoke at the news conference. He told the gathering that "I don't know what the weather will be like for this game, but I can promise you that the sun will be shining on Moncton that day."

This will be the first major league regular season game for any sport in Atlantic Canada. The federal and provincial governments combined to invest $1.5 million to create a full weekend of community events around Moncton's CFL game.

Cohon and LeBlanc were joined at the head table during the news conference by New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham and federal Defence Minister Peter MacKay, the minister responsible for the Atlantic Gateway.

It appears that Moncton's CFL game will take place on a Sunday afternoon.

It's expected there will be a high school football game on Friday, a university football game on Saturday, a street party and numerous community events to create a festival atmosphere.

Moncton is looking to host one CFL regular season game per year for the next five years. With a new stadium that can be expanded to at least 25,000 capacity and brought up to CFL standards, this has renewed talk of the league expanding into the Atlantic region some day.

The Atlantic Schooners were scheduled to begin play in 1984 in Halifax, but they died when federal financing for a stadium fell through.

That's really where the dream of a Moncton franchise got started.

Moncton is the geographic centre of the Maritimes and it has by far the region's biggest drawing power with 1.3 million people who live within a 2.5 hour drive. An Atlantic franchise would clearly need regional support and Moncton is the only place on the East Coast that has a suitable stadium.

"Here's the way I look at it," said LeBlanc. "I know that the topic of a Canadian Football League team in Moncton has been bandied about for quite some time. There are those who think it would absolutely work and there are those who are very skeptical about it.

"My view is the old saying that you have to learn how to crawl before you walk. That's exactly what we're doing here."

Part of Moncton's crawl involved a trip to Calgary for this year's Grey Cup. LeBlanc and Ian Fowler, Moncton's general manager of recreation, parks, tourism and culture, spent four days there as guests of the CFL commissioner.

It was an opportunity for Moncton to wave its flag and to further strengthen its relationship with the CFL. Moncton met with a wide range of people, learned about the Grey Cup's festival side and pick up ideas to make next year's game here memorable.

LeBlanc, Fowler and I stayed in the Grey Cup headquarters hotel. We were in the centre of the action and I watched them work the crowds.

"From my standpoint as the mayor of Moncton, I'm here to promote the game in Moncton," said LeBlanc. "I take my role as an ambassador for the city seriously. Every single opportunity I've had I've invited people from across the country to come to Moncton.

"I talked to the premier of Saskatchewan and we had a great chat about him and his family coming to Moncton. I spoke to many of the national sports media at the Grey Cup and I gave them a personal invitation to come to Moncton for next year's game.

"I talked to Michael Landsberg, who does the Off The Record show on TSN. I offered an invitation for him to come to Moncton for our game and he expressed a great interest in doing a show here. That would be a fantastic opportunity for Moncton."

LeBlanc and Fowler met with several CFL corporate sponsors at the Grey Cup.

It was an opportunity to invite them to come to Moncton and be part of the event surrounding our game.

"It was an invaluable opportunity for us to promote Moncton and to attract people," said LeBlanc. "We want businesses and the national media to take notice of Moncton and the great city we have and the great opportunities we have to host big sporting events."

Moncton's CFL game will be nationally televised on TSN. That's better advertising than the city could ever buy.

"You can be sure the talk will be about expanding the CFL into the Atlantic region," said LeBlanc. "You can be sure that Moncton will be top of mind in every conversation that happens in the media about the CFL coming into the Atlantic region. People will be taking notice of Moncton and what we do at this game."

I read somewhere that they had a fire at the Moncton Stadium a few weeks ago, when a heating system caught fire and burned down a wooden concrete form structure to make one of the stairways in the middle of the night!

They contained the fire without too many issues, since the entire place is basically concrete, and there will be no delays in construction. But it was still kinda strange.

A minor fire at the new Moncton Stadium on the Université de Moncton campus Thursday night could have been much worse, according to Moncton Fire Department Chief Eric Arsenault.

GREG AGNEW/TIMES & TRANSCRIPTWorkers take a lok at the burned out remains of the concrete formwork on a set of stairs being built at the new stadium at the University of Moncton. The stairs caught fire late Thursday. GREG AGNEW/TIMES & TRANSCRIPTA fire late Thursday caused damage to the concrete framework for a set of stairs (above) being built at the new stadium at the Université de Moncton. While causing some disruption in work, it will not affect the completion date. Below, workers take a look at the damage. "It had the potential to be more serious," says the chief.

The only thing that burned was a wooden form constructed to pour concrete stairs. The wooden structure was at the west side of the grandstand, near the CEPS building and the stairs, once constructed, will lead up to the second level of the stadium.

The wood was being warmed with propane heaters Thursday night and, around 11 p.m., a passerby called the fire department to report the structure in flames. Three fire trucks and 12 firefighters responded and were able to douse the fire within minutes. Arsenault says the structure was really burning when they arrived and the flames were visible from Morton Avenue.

The fire department determined the blaze was caused by propane heaters. Crews were trying to warm up the wooden form to facilitate concrete pouring scheduled for yesterday, but the temperature was too high. Also, a large tarp over the top of the wood kept the heat contained.

The stadium was not damaged, but right beside the wooden structure and only a few metres from the CEPS building were four 100-pound propane cylinders. If the call about the fire came in a few minutes later, it's possible the fire could have spread to the tanks, resulting in an explosion that could have done massive damage to the CEPS building and the stadium, which is set to host the 2010 IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in July and a CFL game in the fall.

"You could easily imagine a succession of events that could have been quite spectacular," says Arsenault. "We could have had the potential for loss of life."

Ian Fowler, the city's general manager of recreation, parks, tourism and culture, says the fire should not affect the completion date for the stadium in mid-June.

"That shouldn't change because of this," he says. "It's just a matter of rebuilding the form and pouring the stairs. It's some inconvenience, but nothing to put the project behind schedule."

Moncton CFL game creating excitement

Published Monday February 1st, 2010

Toronto Argonauts' Michael Clemons hopes Touchdown Atlantic will be the start of something bigger
By NEIL HODGE
TIMES & TRANSCRIPT STAFF
When Michael (Pinball) Clemons speaks, people listen.

He's the long-time face of the Toronto Argonauts, a former star running back and one of the most popular figures in Canadian Football League history. With his fame and magnetic personality, people are drawn to him and his views are widely respected.

Clemons offers the CFL high praise for thinking outside the box with its decision to hold a regular season game in a non-traditional market. The Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos will clash on Sept. 26 in Moncton, the league's first regular season game ever in Atlantic Canada.

"It's a strange thing to say, but for me this is the CFL going home," said Clemons. "The league is 100 years old and when we think about the Grey Cup it's the biggest event that happens in our country on a yearly basis.

"The league is one of the most significant Canadian cultural institutions that unites our country. When I say the league is going home after 100 years I mean we're completing it because to be truly Canadian it has to represent all of who we are.

"The Atlantic provinces shouldn't simply have a favourite team from Quebec, Ontario or somewhere out west. The league needs to play games in the Atlantic region. I absolutely love the direction the league is taking in moving a regular season game to Moncton."

Toronto and Edmonton will make history together when they do battle in a 2 p.m. kickoff at the new Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium, which will have a 20,000 capacity for this game.

The CFL is releasing its 2010 regular season schedule today. The game in Moncton will surely draw plenty of national media attention because the league is venturing into new territory.

The game here will be officially known as Touchdown Atlantic, a name that fans chose in a contest organized by the Times & Transcript. There will be a mini Grey Cup festival atmosphere with a few days of community events around the game.

Information on tickets for the game will be announced in early March. Fans can register at CFL.ca/Moncton to receive the latest information when it becomes available.

Toronto, founded in 1873, is North America's oldest professional sports franchise and it has captured 15 Grey Cups. The Argonauts are looking to rebound after finishing at the bottom of the league at 3-9 last season.

Edmonton has been the most dominant team in the CFL's modern era, winning 13 Grey Cups since the club was founded in 1949. The Eskimos are coming off a 9-9 season and they're gearing up to host the 2010 Grey Cup.

"When you look at where this game falls on the schedule, it's an important time in the regular season," said Brent Scrimshaw, co-chairman of the host committee. "It's a game that could have playoff implications.

"Toronto is the home team for this game and I know they want to have the crowd behind them. The Spirit of Edmonton, the Eskimos booster club, has already been in contact and I know there will be a significant Edmonton presence here also."

The CFL will have nine teams when Ottawa hits the field in 2013.

Moncton is looking to host one or two regular season games per year for the next several years to build fan excitement throughout the Atlantic region. It may also help build corporate support and peak the interest of potential owners for a franchise here some day.

"I hope that some day we will have a team in the Atlantic provinces," said Clemons. "I see this game in Moncton as very important. My hope is that it's a first step, not a final step.

"I think 10 teams would be perfect for the league. The Atlantic provinces are an important part of who we are as a nation. I think this is completing the puzzle if we can have an Atlantic team some day."

Clemons established a dozen Toronto franchise records during his 12-year CFL career that ended in 2000. He set a pro football record for most career combined yards with 25,396.

He later took over as head coach of the Argonauts and compiled a career record of 68-55-1. He now has a front-office job as the club's vice-chairman.

What will the Argonauts and Eskimos think of coming to play a game in Moncton?

"It will be something fresh for them," said Clemons. "It will be exciting. The players will feel important because they'll know they're taking part in something special. The guys will walk on the field that day in Moncton knowing that they're making history."

:good:

I will be researching the best places to stay for the best price in Moncton close to downtown and the stadium. Stand by and watch this thread for details. :yahoo:

Sounds good. Ok I'm in but a few details please.

Like, how do we get there? (fly out of Hamilton?)

Where do we meet up before we leave?

How many days off will I need to book? (and what dates exactly?)

Shared room or single accommodation? (please not Tigger...) :0

Final cost?

I'm sure most interested people are eager for those questions to be answered ASAP.

FANatic and I have already booked rooms for this event. They wouldn't let me "Block-book" rooms unless I put it on my credit card. Sorry guys, I can't do that. We are both staying at:

-Holiday Inn Express
-Mountain Rd
-Moncton, NB

CFL/13thman Meet 'n' Greet will be at the Pumphouse Brewery on the evening of Saturday 25 Sept. and we can meet up there after the game on the 26th as well. We'll pass the hat around for CFLFANSFIGHTCANCER
and hopefully make an official presentation during halftime or before the game.

And yes, I will be making another fire helmet for this one. As soon as I find out what the logo is, I'll start and maybe we'll raffle it off to the highest bidder. :D :good:

Here are some other options that I checked out earlier with comparable pricing:

-Amsterdam Inn
Mountain Rd
$129-139
Gov't: $110

-Chateau Moncton
Downtown
$179
No Gov't rate

-Coastal Inn
Dieppe
$134
Gov't: $109

-Colonial Inn
Downtown
$109
Gov't: $90

-Comfort Inn
Mountain Rd
$129
Gov't: $101

-Country Inn and Suites
Mountain Rd
$129-139
Gov't: $104

-Future Inns
Lady Ada Blvd
$129
Gov't: $99

-Hampton Inn and Suites
Trans Canada Hwy
$139
Gov't: $109

-Holiday Inn Express
Mountain Rd
$169
Gov't: $99-119

-Midtown Motel
Downtown
$79-up

-Ramada Crystal Palace
Dieppe
$169
Gov't: $109

There are quite a few more but kind of on the "seedy" side and not the best. I would definately reccommend these ones the most:

-Amsterdam Inn
-Future Inns
-Hampton Inn & Suites
-Holiday Inn Express I've stayed here before and it's my #1 pick for price, location and full B'fast included. :beauty:
-Ramada Crystal Palace

As for flight times, you guys better check those yourself for best deals. I'm not the best on the internet so I wouldn't want to send you on a wild goose chase. Westjet's probably the best.

If anyone wants to know where things are with proximity to the stadium, downtown, or shopping. I know the city fairly well. Feel free to PM me anytime or reply to this thread. You can also find me on FACEBOOK as Stan Lane

So what we need is the best Hotel within staggering distance of wherever we want to party it up most nights since cab rides are annoying and eat into beer $$.

So with that criteria Stan which Hotel would be the best, so Ping has a good idea of who to call.

And is there any peeler bars nearby? :cross:

Since you guys want something both close and fun after-hours  , I will recommend one of the four major hotels on Main Street. That's where you want to be, to really get a taste of Moncton.

- Crowne Plaza
- Delta Beausejour
- Rodd Park House Inn
- The Marriott

...It's only a 5 minute drive to the campus... maybe 10 if it's rush hour.
...You could cab to the campus for 7-9$ or so from there.
...Heck, for 2$ you can catch the #5, #6 or #22 bus and they will haul your ass there just as quickly. I take them every morning to the campus.

Moncton has a nice, padestrian-friendly Main Street. You would be surrounded by pubs/bars/clubs/restaurants (Old Triangle, Pumphouse, St James Gate, Manhattan, The Cage, Navigators, Oxygen Nightclub, Pastalli, The Keg, Graffiti's, The Old Cosmo, Pieces, Mexicali Rosa's, The Alehouse, Great Canadian Pub, Kramers, Wise Guys, Rouge...... theres even an IOOB tucked in there on a side-street.... if anyone here even knows what that is. haha. Those are the first that came to mind.. I am sure I am missing some) Pumphouse Brewery is a MUST VISIT. Great locally brewed beer there. There's also Capitol Theatre, a Farmers Market..

There's also a Cora's Breakfast on Main Street... for those post-celebration mornings :rotf: The city is also littered with a rediculous amount of Tim Hortons locations....

Just my two cents, from a life-long Monctonian

OK then so I guess the most pressing questions are:

Which Hotel are we all going to stay in, to make things easier to arrange group activities like: "which bar are we going to this morning?"

And are we gonna book as individuals or is someone gonna coordinate this for us and we send him the money? cough*ping*cough...

And since I haven't flown anywhere for 25 years can someone familiar with airlines let us know where the best prices are?

I would say the Group Coordinator would certainly be owed at least 2 beers for his efforts from all involved that weekend, in gratitude. :beauty:

(someone who could do all this during daytime hours, quickly, if his job permits, which mine does not)
