New Training Camp rule

Postby Rids on Fri Feb 26, 2010 4:36 pm

Apparently according to comments made by Jim Barker at an Argo function for the fans the other night there is a new rule in place that allows CFL teams to bring Canadian QBs into training camp without them counting against the 75 player limit. Basically treating the Canuck QBs like draft year players.

Should be interesting to see how many teams take advantage of this.

BUT what happens if a CFL GM brings in a Canadian QB to say, try him at slotback? Does the same rule apply, or does it stipulate that he must be brought in for the sole purpose of training at the quarterback position?

I doubt it.

Don't think there's been an announcement from the league, so let's not assume anything yet.

I would guess that they'd have something in place to avoid that situation. However if they made it to the first cutdown period then they could be shifted so maybe you bring in a Erik Glavic and have him throw footballs for two weeks learning the playbook and then move him to receiver once he survives cuts.

I thought it was a little funny that Jim Barker got a little bent out of shape over Chris Malleo spilling the beans ahead of time that he had signed with the Argos. Meanwhile Jim has apparently jumped the gun on the Canadian QB announcement.
Cohon was probably sitting on that until the CIS combine.
Neither news would want to make me run out and buy tickets, but it is what you could call good news I guess.

I think its safe to assume that the actual rule hasn't yet been finalized. I was surprised when I saw Barker had said that but obviously the teams have been given the heads up so they can start planning their implementation of it. I would also suspect that because of the CFLPA negotiations we won't hear the actual details until there's an agreement of training camp starts.

I wish I could remember that where I saw the Barker comment but It was my impression that he didn't actually say that it was a training camp only rule... If an exemption only last until the regular season starts then this initiative feels like a training camp body/ PR exercise but not a real attempt to develop Canadian QBs.

Interesting that there are three Canadian QBs invited to E-camp. Kind of like the chicken and the egg. Were they invited because teams knew an exemption was going to be in place or is this years crop just that good and GMs wanted a rule change to help keep them around? Add in Teale Orban (who is playing in Alaska BTW) and Patrick Cowan (in the unlikely event he could qualify) and there could be five Canadian QBs in camp this year. Unprecedented....

Patrick Cowan and his brother are imports for CFL purposes. Born in BC but didn't live in Canada for 7 years before their 15th birthday.

Its my understanding that QBs are neither import or non-import. Classifying a QB as Canadian wouldn't have to necessarily follow the same rules as being non-import. I know that it would be unlikely for that to occur but until any kind of rules are announced I can classify Cowan however I want. :cowboy:

There is if you add a goat and a midget.
Contrary to popular belief, the most dangerous animal is not the lion or tiger or even the elephant. The most dangerous animal is a shark riding on an elephant, just trampling and eating everything they see.

I have a hunch that Hamilton will take advantage of it this year.

Just a hunch. I wouldn't be too surprised if Toronto took advantage of it either since it was on Barker's mind enough to mention it.

Barker does seem to be leaning that way. At least publicly...
This was in the paper today:
Barker is open to seeing what the Canadian quarterbacks have to offer at the CFL evaluation camp this weekend in Toronto.

Two natives of the Greater Toronto Area — Burlington’s Danny Brannagan, who played at Queen’s, and Pickering’s Erik Glavic, who took his talents to Calgary — will put themselves up for debate among CFL front-office types. Guelph’s Justin Dunk also will attend, but another QB, Michael Faulds of Western Ontario, will be absent because of a knee injury.

CFL clubs are able to carry Canadian-born quarterbacks without using a roster spot.

“I’m anxious to watch these three kids at the combine,” Barker said. “They’ve all shown they have the skills sets you need to play well in university, but do they have the same skills to be competitive in the CFL? I want to see what they can do.”
