Printer signs extension

Postby D on Sun Mar 07, 2010 10:34 pm

VANCOUVER -- The BC Lions Football Club announced this evening that quarterback Casey Printers has agreed to terms on a contract extension. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not released.

“Casey has demonstrated that he’s not only a gifted and exciting quarterback, but that he is capable of being one of our core leaders moving forward into next season,” said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono.

Printers rejoined the Lions as a free agent in October last year and was activated for the final five games of the regular season. He made his first start for the Black and Orange since 2005 on October 24th at Saskatchewan and ignited the Lions offence with a 19 of 30, 339-yard, two TD performance that night. He would finish the season good on 43 of 68 passing attempts for 686 yards and three TD’s.

Despite suffering a thumb injury in the final game of the season, Printers bounced back to start both East Division playoff games and led the Lions to a 34-27 win over his former club, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, in the East Semi-Final passing for 360 yards and a TD as well notching a 12-yard rushing major.

“As excited as I was to return last season, I am even more ecstatic to be signing this extension and getting an opportunity to contribute to the Lions in any way I can,” said Printers. “We have an outstanding group of players on both offence and defence that will make us very difficult to play against in 2010.”

I hope this doesn't come off like sour grapes, but this does remind me of when he first joined the Ticats:

1) Big fanfare on his return.
2) Played quite well, but lost first game back.
3) Got hurt (hand, specifically)
4) Lost a couple more games
5) Won a game - everyone thinks the Old Casey is back.
6) Lost more games.....

Hey, I hope it works out well for BC, but I think the 1-4 record since his return sounds a bit too familiar to me.

I don't think its sour grapes. Once bitten twice shy comes to mind...
It seems like your 6 points come down to 3 things. Hype, Injury, Record... however, the hype this time has been very different than Hamilton. Probably less this time in 6 months than the first week before. Casey wasn't the savior in BC. He was brought in as an injury replacement. Practice roster, 3rd string. He wasn't given the biggest contract in the league and I'm sure he still doesn't make near that after resigning. There were no dramatic press conferences by BC, then or now, and there weren't any popcorn quotes.
As for getting hurt, I don't think that Casey has been particularly injury prone. The knock on him is how he deals with injuries. (or any kind of adversity.) I don't recall any of the sulking and ridiculousness that happening in Hamilton reoccurring in BC last year.
The record is eerily similar, but there are too many factors affecting wins and losses to take that as proof BC will be Hamilton all over.

I think right now everything is coming together to allow Printers to be successful in BC. The key, however, is whether he has truly matured and changed his ways. I'm hopeful, but we won't know until he faces significant difficulty or criticism. So far he's been fairly protected from that in BC. Only once things go really badly will people know if New Casey is just a myth. Of course you can can say you were never fooled. :cowboy:

I think he has learned from the past, he seems to be more of a team guy. that 1-4 record you mention is quite decieving in a lot of those games he got the team a lead and the defence couldn't close out the game.

In other news the Lions released Buck Piece today

Not a surprise they signed him and let Pierce go with his injuries you cant rely on him to be the starter and pay him as one.

I think that's almost an exact quote from when he joined Hamilton, IIRC.

Except Casey is meant to be a BC Lion. Playing in the Lions' system is where he excels. Only time will tell for sure, but even if he bombs, BC has two quality back-ups in Jackson and Lulay.

As D points out though, his won/loss record starting at QB last year was deceiving. The offense rallied around him and he was lights out. The defense did not.
